Alongside the core and foundational subjects that provide a strong academic foundation and character, your child will select 3 subject options to pursue in IGCSEs, as well as our bespoke and internationally accredited BISC courses.

IGCSE Core
Our core subjects give students a strong academic foundation in English, Mathematics, and Science, with the flexibility to study each at two levels. Those ready for an extra challenge can take Additional Mathematics, separate sciences, and English offered as both a First and Second Language. Students also explore English Literature, developing critical thinking, analysis, and communication skills that support their success across all IGCSE subjects and prepare them for the IB Diploma Programme.
IGCSE Foundation
Through Wellbeing, Physical Education, and Ways of Learning, students learn to care for their body and mind and understand how they learn best, developing empathy, leadership, and resilience. In PE, they cultivate a love of movement and learn how to stay healthy. Students can also choose an additional IGCSE Physical Education elective to develop their understanding further. In Wellbeing, they explore online safety, personal values, body confidence, and self-regulation. In Ways of Learning, students develop self-awareness, skills, habits, and a growth mindset that empower them to make smart learning choices.
First Language Foundation
A key focus is on developing students’ first language and cultural identity. Korean and Vietnamese students continue their first language studies, deepening their connection to their heritage. Others have the opportunity to self-study an additional language, exploring their own cultural roots or interests. Students whose first language is English study IGCSE Global Perspectives, building research, critical thinking, and communication skills while gaining a deeper understanding of the world around them.
Second Language
Students can choose to study IGCSE French or Spanish, allowing them to explore a new language and culture. The courses focus on practical, everyday communication while also introducing students to the customs, traditions, and perspectives of French and Spanish-speaking communities. By making their own language choice, students develop independence, curiosity, and confidence as they strengthen their communication skills and global awareness.
Geography & History
Students can choose to study IGCSE Geography or History, exploring the world and its stories from multiple perspectives. In Geography, they investigate physical, human, and environmental systems, using maps, data, and case studies to understand the challenges shaping our planet. In History, they examine key events and societies, analysing sources and forming reasoned conclusions. Both subjects develop critical thinking, research, and analytical skills.
Computer Science & Design Technology
Students can choose IGCSE Computer Science or BISC Design & Technology, developing the skills and mindset to be future-ready. In Computer Science, they learn coding, computational thinking, and problem-solving through hands-on projects that tackle real challenges. In Design & Technology, students explore creative solutions to practical design problems, considering sustainability and impact. Both subjects foster innovation, adaptability, and confidence.
The Arts
Students can choose Art & Design, Dance, Drama, or Music, developing confidence and creative expression. In Art & Design, they explore media, techniques, and personal ideas. Dance builds performance skills, choreography, and interpretative thinking. Drama fosters collaboration, storytelling, and stage presence, while Music develops musicianship, composition, and expressive performance. Across all subjects, students grow independence, imagination, and resilience, preparing them to take creative risks and express themselves confidently in future study and life.
I really think the IGCSE is such a good preparation for the IBDP. The IGCSE helped me so much in having a step ahead in the IBDP. During the exam season, I was able to understand what my weaknesses and strengths are, and that will serve me in the IB, knowing what I need to focus on.
IBDP & BIS HANOI DIPLOMA (AGE 16 - 18)
At the British International School Hanoi, Sixth Form students can choose between the rigorous International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) or the more flexible BIS Hanoi Diploma. Students taking the full IBDP choose six subjects across six subject groups, alongside the three core components:
- Creativity, Activity & Service (CAS): Students engage in meaningful projects such as charity fundraisers, learning a musical instrument, coaching younger students, or environmental initiatives.
- Theory of Knowledge (TOK): Students develop critical thinking, consider issues from multiple perspectives, and make reasoned, ethical judgments, essential skills for life and university.
- Extended Essay (EE): A research project in a chosen subject that builds research, writing, and analytical skills, preparing students for higher education.
The BIS Hanoi Diploma provides a flexible pathway allowing students to take a minimum of four IB courses alongside the CAS programme, with the option to complete the Extended Essay in a subject of their choice.
Both pathways are internationally recognised, with graduates often progressing to top universities worldwide.
THE SIX IBDP SUBJECT GROUPS
Students choose one subject from each group, ensuring a broad and balanced curriculum. In Group 6, students may choose to select an Arts subject or another elective from a group they have already chosen.

An Duy

Meet An Duy, a standout student from the Class of 2025 with aspirations to study Astrophysics at university. Duy’s journey has been defined by both academic ambition and social purpose. As Head of the Social Purpose Committee, he led initiatives that brought students together to create positive change, while developing confidence in public speaking and team leadership. Reflecting on his time at BIS Hanoi, Duy shared, “BIS Hanoi has greatly supported my learning journey and helped me develop the skills I need for the future.”
Runa
Currently studying at Sophia University (Japan)
Meet Runa, a dedicated student from the Class of 2025 who plans to return to Japan to study Environmental Science with a focus on Chemistry. Her passion for the subject – and her desire to one day teach it – was inspired by the care and dedication of her IB teachers at BIS Hanoi. Reflecting on their influence, Runa shared, “All of the teachers at BIS Hanoi were always supportive and consistently provided us with meaningful learning experiences, which helped me gain new perspectives.”
Hongmi
Currently studying at the University of Manchester (UK)
Meet Hongmi, from the Class of 2025, who plans to return to South Korea to reunite with family and friends before continuing her studies in the United Kingdom. Hongmi embraced every opportunity to grow, stepping outside of her comfort zone to take part in the secondary production, senior choir, and the Southeast Asia Performing Arts Festival. Reflecting on her journey, she shared, “BIS Hanoi made me very confident about myself because I tried so many activities. I can take risks, and I’m confident I can do things well in the future too.”
Miguel
Currently studying at the University of Birmingham (UK)
Meet Miguel, an ambitious student from the Class of 2025 who plans to study Mechanical Engineering at university. After moving to Vietnam from Brazil two years ago, Miguel quickly found his place in the BIS Hanoi community, taking on the role of Deputy Head Student and embracing every challenge with curiosity and determination. Reflecting on his experience, Miguel shared, “The most golden thing the school has ever given to us is independence, balanced with support. It built our critical thinking, our resilience, and prepared us for whatever comes next.”
Bao Ngan
Currently continuing her studies in the UK
Meet Bao Ngan, an accomplished Head Student from the Class of 2025 who plans to take a gap year before continuing her studies in the United Kingdom. Ngan embraced every opportunity to grow from performing in the Guys and Dolls production to writing her own children’s book and leading her peers with confidence and care. Reflecting on her journey, Ngan shared, “BIS has shaped me to become someone who is very adaptable and versatile. I am a lot more assured in myself now, and more concrete in my plan for the future.”
