Dear Parents,

Balancing ECAs, Rest and Family Time

Last week we launched our NAIS HK ECA provision for Term 1 because we believe that a well-rounded education extends far beyond the classroom. Our extracurricular activities (ECAs) provide wonderful opportunities for children to discover new interests, develop talents, build friendships, and strengthen important life skills such as teamwork, resilience and perseverance.

Whether participating in sport, music, performing arts, languages, STEAM or robotics, ECAs help children to grow in confidence and character.

However, it is equally important that children have time to rest, recharge and simply be children. In today's busy world, it can be tempting to fill every afternoon with organised activities. Yet unstructured play with friends, family time, reading, creativity and quiet reflection all contribute significantly to children's wellbeing and healthy development.

Balancing ECAs, rest and family time, therefore, will be different for every child and family. Some children will thrive with several commitments, while others may benefit from a lighter schedule. As parents and educators, our shared responsibility is to ensure that children are not only engaged and challenged, but also happy, healthy and emotionally balanced.

We encourage families to regularly review routines at home and consider if children have sufficient unstructured time each week to rest, recover and at times, simply be bored! When children have opportunities to rest, connect with family and pursue their own interests, they return to school energised, focused and ready to share these experiences.

By working together, we can help our children develop the skills, passions and wellbeing habits that will support them not only in school, but throughout their lives.

Looking ahead to STEAM Week

Get ready for an exciting week of creativity, innovation and problem-solving as we celebrate STEAM Week from Monday 5th October to Friday 9th October! This year’s theme, inspired by the MIT Challenge, is Designing Solutions for Climate Change. All information can be found on Firefly: https://naishk.fireflycloud.asia/2026-27.

Throughout the week, pupils will engage in hands-on activities that combine Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics to explore real-world environmental challenges. Working collaboratively, children will investigate the impacts of climate change, develop innovative ideas, and design practical solutions that could help create a more sustainable future. We look forward to seeing our young innovators think critically, take creative risks, and showcase their ingenuity as they tackle one of the most important challenges facing our world today.

I hope that everyone has a great week ahead,

Stephen Sharma
