Wellington MUN Conference

‘Conflict: Healing the scars of the past’. This was the bold theme underpinning debates in the three committees running at the Wellington MUN on 24 and 25 March. The committees: Security Council; Human Rights Council and the General Assembly for beginners constituted of delegates from five international schools in Shanghai. Eighteen delegates and two chairs representing BISS Puxi were all raring to go as the excitement of socialising and collaborating with other like-minded delegates reached fever-pitch.

During the opening ceremony, the keynote speaker and founder of Wellington College China, Ms. Joy Qiao, highlighted the need to maintain a fair playing field in global affairs as an essential tool to address and attempt to heal wounds from a painful past.

Our delegates, ranging from our enthusiastic Year 6s to the senior and experienced Key Stage 4 and IB students gave a positive account of themselves as they presented their opening statements, engaged in the lobbying and merging of resolutions and debated passionately.

Those who were attending their first MUN conference learned valuable lessons on how to raise points of order, vote for amendments of clauses and whole resolutions as well as avoid making reference to first person language.

At the end of the conference, all our delegates were in agreement that they are now better prepared for the next conference and have acquired skills that will see them perform even better.

Special mention to Chloe Schwengels who emerged as the 'Most Improved Delegate’ in the General Assembly, and Eunice Chang and Salma Gichana who excelled as Chairs in the Human Rights Council.

The MUN team of Directors, Ms. Ogechi Osedumme, Ms. Doshila Neergheen and Mr. Joseph Gichana were extremely proud of the dedication and commitment on display from all the participants and look forward to even more fruitful MUN ECA sessions in Term 3.
