In the first few weeks of this year, the STEAM department was a flurry of activity. Over the summer, the DVC (Da Vinci Centre) underwent many changes with new resources being purchased and a new system of organisation being introduced. The DVC now has clearly labelled areas for the students to have easy access to the existing tools and the new consumable materials. The design possibilities are endless!

On Thursday 13 October at 6pm, the PE Department held an informative virtual meeting to highlight the importance of developing water confidence at an early age. BISS Puxi is one of the only schools in Shanghai that offers swimming experiences to Pre-Nursery children.

In addition to being pupils at BISS Puxi, all our students are also members of a wider family – the community of students from Nord Anglia schools all around the world. They have an important role in supporting Nord Anglia Education’s mission of providing high-quality international education by fostering respect for other people’s identities and cultures. Children learn best through open-ended, natural resources that encourage them to use all of their senses to find out about the world around them.

There is a famous Chinese proverb that reads ‘To learn a language is to have one more window from which to look at the world.’ A mellifluous statement to anybody’s ears of course, but, for ambitious young students of varying backgrounds and cultures attending a large international school such as BISS Puxi it perhaps resonates truer than anybody.

As an adult, you enter one of our special Primary Music classrooms. Welcome to Music room P102! A myriad of instruments fill the room: keyboards, rainbow coloured xylophones, a whole host of djembes, a shiny trumpet… even a huge double bass standing guard in the corner.

The benefits of reading are endless, but essential to acquiring knowledge and to making sense of the world around us. According to the Young Readers Foundation, reading books is important to build confidence, increase memory and imagination. Children who are competent readers are able to engage in critical thinking, and it improves language and communication skills.

Assessment in Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is conducted through a TOK Exhibition and a 1600-word TOK essay. The TOK exhibition is an internal assessment component that is marked by the teacher and moderated by the IB.

Bilingualism and multilingualism are an asset, as learners actively use the languages they know to learn English: a valuable skill that learners, regardless of whether they are ‘New to English’ or not, bring with them.

We were very happy to be able to welcome our parents again in our school last week to share all the exciting things that are going on right now as well as our plans for this academic year.

To do well in science, you need to develop effective study skills and learn to participate in class. If your science class includes labs, you should learn to do well in the labs as well.

The September full moon brought a special bit of magic to BISS Early Years this year. The Baby Cubs of the school got together to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival.

As your child begins their education journey in preschool — or even if they’re a bit older in primary or secondary school — creating friendships is vital for their social development along the way.
